Casting material
An introduction to casting materials
Current prototyping technology is developing strongly every day and the most prominent among them is 3D printing technology. However, the production of products in large quantities is optimized with traditional casting technology. The biggest reason lies in the economy and reliability. In addition, Casting production often offers other great benefits such as the application of many different casting materials and casting with a variety of masses. Metal casting or also known as casting foundry can even cast many different metals on a casting. The aesthetics of casting production are also guaranteed when they are often used in the production of products such as electric pillars, church bells, and monument casting.
Prototyping (Patternmaking)
Industrial casting production is usually done in 5 basic steps such as prototyping, molding, melting and casting, shake-out and clean treatment, heat treatment, and inspection.
The first step in the casting process is the prototyping of the end product, using materials such as wood, metal, plastic or sand. This template will then be used to fill the empty cavity of the mold to create accurate geometry and product parameters.
Molding
Molds should be ready for liquid metal pouring after molding. There are two common types of casting foundry molds that are reusable and non-reusable molds. The reusable mold can be used many times and is usually metal casting molds
Melting and pouring
Casting can be done with iron-based metals (ferrous) such as stainless steel or non-ferrous metal such as aluminum or copper. The metal is usually melted in a furnace and then the molten metal is poured into the gaps in the mold. Finally, the molten metal is awaited to harden.
Shake-out and clean treatment
After the metal has hardened, the mold is vibrated to remove the sand during the casting foundry process. Any excess material is then removed during the cleaning process
Heat treatment
The product after the casting process usually has the same appearance as the pattern. Based on technical requirements and usage needs, cast products are often subjected to different heat treatment stages.
Inspection
Finally, the cast product will be put into the test to test its structural and mechanical integrity. This step is normally carried out to ensure the consistent quality of industrial casting
